KENAI RIVER FISHING REPORT: MID-JULY 2026 (THE REDS ARE RUNNING)

The sockeye are running, and the river is filling up fast.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game has been counting late-run sockeye at the Mile 19 sonar since July 1. Through July 10, more than 79,000 fish had already pushed upriver. On July 10 alone the sonar clocked over 11,000 reds in a single day, and the daily numbers keep climbing.

Here's the part that matters if you're thinking about a trip. The run hasn't peaked yet. Historically the single biggest days on the Kenai land between July 22 and 27, when the sonar routinely counts 50,000 to 75,000 fish in a day. The water's sitting around 52 degrees, the weather's warm, and the fish are fresh from the ocean.

In plain terms: right now is one of the best windows of the entire year to fish the Kenai.

Sockeye (red) salmon: The main event. Reds are stacking into the river daily and the run builds through the end of the month. They're the best-eating salmon on the planet and the most beginner-friendly fish on the Kenai.

Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden: Feeding hard behind the salmon. A great morning or evening option when you want a break from the reds.

We won't sell you something that isn't happening. King salmon fishing on the Kenai is closed for the entire 2026 season.

ADF&G issued an emergency order shutting the late-run king fishery from June 20 through August 15, with no retention and no catch and release. The closures protect a king return that's projected near record lows. It's the right call for the river, and it's the same story up and down the Kenai this year.

Sockeye fishing on the Kenai is simple to learn and hard to stop once you start.

The technique is called flipping. You drift a weighted setup through schools of moving fish and set the hook when the line ticks. It's repetitive, it's effective, and first-timers pick it up in an afternoon. Kids do it. Grandparents do it. Everybody fills a cooler.
