WHY FISH WITH A KENAI RIVER GUIDE

The Kenai River is one of the most productive fisheries in the world, but knowing where to be — and when — makes the difference between a good day and a legendary one. A local fishing guide puts decades of river knowledge to work for you, reading water conditions, tracking fish movements, and positioning your boat on the most productive stretches of the river.

Kenai River guides don't just find fish. They teach you how to catch them. Whether you're a first-time angler learning to set the hook on a sockeye or an experienced fly caster dialing in your drift, your guide adapts instruction to your skill level. You'll pick up techniques that work specifically on this river — back-bouncing for kings, flipping for reds, swinging flies for trophy rainbows — and you'll take that knowledge home with you.

Every guided trip includes all the gear you need: rods, reels, tackle, bait, and waders. Your guide handles the boat, ties the rigs, nets your fish, and takes care of cleaning and vacuum-sealing your catch at the end of the day. All you have to do is show up ready to fish.

Time on the water in Alaska is precious. A guided trip means you spend every minute fishing instead of figuring out access points, rigging tackle, or guessing where the fish are holding. If you're traveling to the Kenai for a few days, a guide is the fastest way to maximize your catch and your experience. Combine guided days with riverfront cabin stays at Marlow's and you've got a complete Alaska fishing trip without the logistics headache.

GUIDED SALMON TRIPS

The Kenai River hosts three major salmon runs each summer, and our guides know every one of them inside and out. King salmon arrive first, with the early run pushing through in May and the trophy second run filling the river in June and July. These are the fish Alaska is famous for — 40 to 70 pounds of raw power on the end of your line. Guided king trips run from power boats and drift boats, back-bouncing bait through deep holes and tailouts where the big fish stack up.

Sockeye salmon hit the Kenai in massive numbers starting in mid-June, with the peak of the run in July. These are the best-eating fish in the river, and catching them is fast-paced, physical, and addictive. Your guide positions the drift boat in the right lanes and coaches you through the flipping technique that makes sockeye fishing on the Kenai unlike anything else in the world. Limits are common on good days.

Silver salmon round out the season from August through September. Silvers are aggressive, acrobatic, and willing to hit spinners, flies, and bait. They're a favorite among anglers who love topwater action and hard-fighting fish in the 8 to 15-pound range. Guided silver trips are perfect for families and groups because the fish cooperate and the weather is often still warm.

All guided salmon trips include your boat, guide, rods, tackle, bait, rain gear, and fish processing at the end of the day. Trips launch from docks minutes from your cabin at Marlow's, so there's no early-morning drive to a distant boat ramp. TROPHY TROUT & FLY FISHING GUIDES

September and October bring some of the finest trophy trout fishing on the planet to the Kenai River. After the salmon have spawned and the crowds have thinned, enormous rainbow trout move into the shallows to gorge on salmon eggs and decaying flesh. These fish regularly measure 20 to 30 inches, with true giants pushing past 30 — thick-bodied, wild, and explosive on light tackle.

Our trophy trout guides specialize in drift boat fly fishing. You'll float quiet stretches of the Kenai, casting egg patterns, flesh flies, and streamers to fish feeding in crystal-clear water. Your guide reads the river, manages the drift, and puts you in position to make the perfect presentation. It's sight fishing at its best — watching a massive rainbow rise from the gravel to inhale your fly is a moment you won't forget.

Fly rods and all terminal tackle are provided, but experienced fly anglers are welcome to bring their own setups. Guides carry a range of rods from 5-weight to 8-weight depending on conditions and target size. Whether you're a seasoned fly fisher or picking up a fly rod for the first time, your guide tailors the day to your ability and helps you improve with every cast.

Fall on the Kenai is quiet, uncrowded, and visually stunning. The birch and cottonwood trees turn gold along the riverbank, moose are active along the water, and you'll often have entire stretches of river to yourself. It's a completely different experience from peak summer season — and many of our returning guests say it's their favorite time of year. Combine a trout day with our Bucket List Package for the ultimate Alaska angling trip.

HALIBUT & OCEAN CHARTERS

No Alaska fishing trip is complete without a day on the ocean. We coordinate halibut charters out of Homer and Ninilchik — both an easy day trip from the lodge in Sterling. You'll head out into Cook Inlet or Kachemak Bay on a fully equipped charter boat, dropping heavy tackle to the ocean floor where halibut averaging 30 to 80 pounds are waiting. Fish over 100 pounds are caught every season, and the occasional barn-door halibut tops 200.

A typical halibut charter runs 6 to 8 hours. Your captain provides all rods, reels, bait, and tackle. You'll learn to jig heavy gear along the bottom, feel the distinct thump of a halibut bite, and fight these powerful flatfish to the surface. The crew handles gaffing, cleaning, and packaging your catch so it's ready to ship or take home. Many guests pair a halibut day with a river salmon day to fill their coolers with a variety of Alaska's finest seafood.

Homer is about a 2.5-hour drive south from Marlow's and is known as the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World. Ninilchik is closer at about 90 minutes and offers equally productive fishing with smaller crowds. Both ports give you access to some of the richest ocean fishing grounds in the state.

We recommend scheduling your ocean day mid-trip so you have river days on either side. That way you get the full Alaska experience — salmon and trout from the Kenai, halibut from the ocean — all coordinated through the lodge with no planning on your end. See our fishing packages for multi-day combos that include both river and ocean days.

WHAT'S INCLUDED ON A GUIDED TRIP

Every guided fishing trip arranged through Marlow's comes fully equipped so you can focus on fishing, not logistics. Your guide provides the boat, all rods and reels, terminal tackle, bait, lures, flies, and waders or rain gear as needed. Fish are netted, bled, and handled properly on the water to preserve quality. At the end of the day, your guide cleans, fillets, and vacuum-seals your catch so it's ready for the freezer or the grill.

Guides also bring safety equipment, first aid supplies, and local knowledge that keeps you on productive water all day long. They know the current regulations, handle any paperwork or check-in requirements, and ensure you're fishing legally and ethically. Many of our guides have fished the Kenai for 15 to 25 years — they've seen every condition the river can throw at you and know how to adjust.

What you need to bring: a valid Alaska sport fishing license (available online or at local shops in Sterling and Soldotna), layered clothing for changing weather, sunglasses with polarized lenses, sunscreen, snacks, and water or drinks for the day. A camera is highly recommended — your guide will be happy to take photos of your catches. If you prefer your own rod or fly setup, you're welcome to bring it.

Guided trips typically run 6 to 8 hours depending on the species and conditions. Half-day options are available for guests with younger kids or those who want to mix fishing with other Kenai Peninsula activities. Talk to us when you check availability and we'll build a schedule that fits your group.

HOW WE COORDINATE YOUR GUIDES

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Marlow's is that we handle all the guide coordination for you. Instead of spending hours researching guides, comparing reviews, and trying to book individual trips around your travel dates, you tell us what you want to catch and we put the right guide on the right water on the right day. We work with a small network of trusted local guides who we've fished with, vetted, and built relationships with over the years.

Scheduling is flexible. Want to fish kings in the morning and switch to sockeye in the afternoon? Done. Want to take a rest day mid-trip and fish from the private docks on your own? No problem. We build your itinerary around your priorities and adjust on the fly if weather or river conditions change. Multi-day packages get priority booking with our top guides, and we can arrange back-to-back days targeting different species so you experience the full range of what the Kenai has to offer.

For larger groups, we coordinate multiple boats and guides so everyone fishes together or in pairs, depending on your preference. Family trips, corporate retreats, and bachelor parties all get the same personal attention. We've hosted groups of 2 to 18 and know how to keep everyone on fish and having a great time.

The best dates on the Kenai book months in advance, especially for king salmon in June and sockeye in July. We recommend reaching out early to lock in your preferred dates and guides. Call us at 907-341-4966 or check availability online to start planning your guided fishing trip.
