CHARTER FISHING THE KENAI FROM A RIVERFRONT LODGE

Most Kenai fishing charters start with a drive to a public boat launch, a fight for parking, and a wait in line behind every other operator on the river. At Marlow's, your charter launches from a private dock on the property — you walk down the path with your coffee and step onto the boat.

We're a small, owner-operated lodge in Sterling, Alaska, right on the middle Kenai River. Our charters are run by local guides who fish these waters every day — not seasonal hires reading from a script. They know which holes are producing, when the sockeye are stacking, and exactly where the trophy rainbows are feeding by the week.

Pair a charter with one of our four riverfront cabins and you've got the kind of trip serious anglers come to Alaska for: step-out-and-fish access, a real lodge, and guides who actually know the river. View our fishing packages for multi-day options that bundle lodging and guided trips.

WHAT YOU'LL CATCH ON A KENAI CHARTER

KING SALMON — MID-MAY THROUGH JULY

The Kenai is famous for producing some of the largest king salmon (Chinook) on earth. Charter trips target kings from drift and power boats using bait, plugs, and back-bouncing techniques. Retention regulations are set in-season — some years are catch-and-release, others allow harvest. Your guide will know the current rules on the day you fish.

SOCKEYE SALMON — MID-JUNE THROUGH JULY

Sockeye runs on the Kenai are world-class — millions of fish push upriver each summer. Charters during the peak often produce limits in a few hours of fishing. The classic Kenai flip technique takes a little practice and your guide will dial you in within the first few casts.

SILVER SALMON — AUGUST THROUGH SEPTEMBER

Silvers (coho) are the most aggressive salmon in the river. They hit hard, jump often, and fight all the way to the boat — a favorite for spin casters and fly anglers alike. September silvers paired with cooling water and fall colors on the Kenai is one of the best charter trips of the year.

TROPHY RAINBOW TROUT — SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER

As salmon spawning winds down, the Kenai's big rainbows feed heavily on eggs and flesh. Drift boat fly charters in September and early October produce the largest trout of the year — fish in the high 20s and low 30s are realistic on the right day. Catch-and-release on most of the Kenai.

HALIBUT — OCEAN CHARTERS FROM HOMER & NINILCHIK

Want to add a saltwater day to your Kenai trip? We coordinate full-day halibut charters out of Homer and Ninilchik, both a scenic drive from the lodge. Halibut, lingcod, rockfish, and Pacific cod are all on the menu. Read more on our guided fishing page.

Our Bucket List Package is a 5-day, 6-night all-inclusive Alaska fishing experience starting at $3,000 per person. It covers two guided river charter days, a fly-out adventure to remote waters, an ocean halibut charter, riverfront cabin lodging, and all gear — one price, no add-ons, no surprises.

KENAI FISHING CHARTER FAQ

WHAT'S THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR KENAI FISHING CHARTERS? +

Charter season on the Kenai runs from mid-May through early October. King salmon charters peak from mid-May through July. Sockeye salmon charters are strongest from mid-June through late July. Silver salmon take over in August and September, and trophy rainbow trout fishing is at its best in September and early October.

DO I NEED A FISHING LICENSE FOR A KENAI CHARTER? +

Yes. Every angler over 16 needs an Alaska sport fishing license, plus a king salmon stamp if kings are open. Licenses are easy to buy online from Alaska Department of Fish and Game or in person at most Kenai Peninsula tackle shops. We'll point you to the closest spot when you arrive.

WHAT'S INCLUDED ON A GUIDED KENAI FISHING CHARTER FROM MARLOW'S? +

Your guide, the boat, all rods, reels, tackle, bait, and waders. Charters launch within minutes of the lodge. Fish cleaning is handled at our on-site fish processing station back at the property. You bring your license, a cooler if you plan to take fish home, and weather-appropriate clothing.

ARE KENAI FISHING CHARTERS GOOD FOR BEGINNERS? +

Absolutely. Our guides spend a lot of their day teaching — how to read the water, how to set a hook, how to fight a salmon to the boat. First-time anglers regularly out-fish experienced ones because they listen to the guide. Kids and beginners are welcome on every trip.

HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL KENAI RIVER FISHING CHARTER? +

Most river charters run a half day (roughly 5 to 6 hours) or a full day (8 to 10 hours). Ocean halibut charters out of Homer or Ninilchik are typically 10 to 12 hours including travel. We help you match trip length to species, conditions, and your group's stamina.

CAN I KEEP THE FISH I CATCH? +

Yes, within Alaska Department of Fish and Game limits. Sockeye, silvers, and pinks are typically retained. King salmon retention depends on the in-season management for the Kenai. Rainbow trout are catch-and-release on most of the Kenai. Your guide will know the current regulations the day you fish.
