The Kenai River supports massive runs of sockeye (red) salmon, silver (coho) salmon, pink salmon, and trophy rainbow trout. The nearby Kasilof River offers king salmon fishing when open. Ocean charters out of Ninilchik, Homer, and Seward target halibut, lingcod, rockfish, and Pacific cod.

Salmon fishing peaks from mid-June through September. Sockeye run strongest in July, silvers peak in August and September. Trophy rainbow trout fishing is best in September when the fish are feeding aggressively on salmon eggs. Ocean halibut fishing runs May through September. Each month offers a different target species, so there's always something biting.

The drive itself is stunning, passing through the Chugach Mountains, along Turnagain Arm, and through the Kenai Peninsula. There is no public transit to Sterling, so a rental car is recommended.
