FISH THE UPPER KENAI — STAY AT A RIVERFRONT LODGE NEARBY

The upper Kenai River runs through the Cooper Landing area between Kenai Lake and Skilak Lake — clear turquoise water known for world-class trophy rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and strong sockeye runs. Marlow's on the Kenai is a riverfront lodge in Sterling, a short drive downriver, not in Cooper Landing itself. We base you on the river and coordinate guided day trips to the upper Kenai.

A LODGE BASE, NOT A COOPER LANDING ADDRESS

To be clear: Marlow's is located in Sterling, Alaska — roughly 30 to 40 minutes downriver from Cooper Landing. We don't claim a Cooper Landing address. What we offer is a comfortable, riverfront home base with private docks on the Kenai, from which guided trips run up to the Cooper Landing stretch and the upper river. You get the upper Kenai's fishing without giving up a real lodge.

WHAT MAKES THE UPPER KENAI SPECIAL

The upper Kenai River — the stretch between Kenai Lake and Skilak Lake that flows past the Cooper Landing area — is some of the most striking water in Alaska. Glacial silt settles out in the lakes upstream, so the river here runs a clear, vivid turquoise that the lower river never quite matches.

That clarity is part of what makes it a fly angler's river. The upper Kenai is famous for its trophy rainbow trout — wild, hard-fighting fish that feed heavily on salmon eggs and flesh through the season. Dolly Varden share the same water and take the same flies, often in good numbers. It is genuinely world-class trout water, and it fishes well from early summer straight through fall.

The upper river also carries strong sockeye salmon runs as those fish push toward Kenai Lake and beyond. Sockeye are a different game than trout — built around timing and technique — and on the right week the upper Kenai puts you on both within the same trip. That mix of clear water, trophy rainbows, and salmon is exactly why anglers single out this stretch of river.

HOW GUESTS FISH THE UPPER KENAI FROM MARLOW'S

Guests at Marlow's reach the upper Kenai through guided day trips arranged directly by the lodge. The Cooper Landing stretch is a short, scenic drive upriver — close enough to be an easy morning run, far enough that you get genuinely different water from the docks at the lodge.

A typical upper-river day is a guided drift targeting trophy rainbow trout and Dolly Varden, or a sockeye-focused trip when the runs are in. Guides are experienced locals who know how this water changes week to week, so trips are built around what's fishing best when you're here — not a fixed script. All gear is provided: rods, reels, tackle, and waders.

Because Marlow's coordinates trips on the Kenai River, dedicated trophy rainbow trout days, and fly-outs, you can mix an upper-river day with other fishing across your stay. Browse our fishing packages to see how an upper Kenai trip fits into a full Alaska itinerary.

A RIVERFRONT LODGE TO BASE YOUR TRIP

Marlow's on the Kenai is a family-run lodge, owned and run by Dan Rusk, sitting right on the banks of the Kenai River in Sterling, Alaska. It's a real lodge — not a roadside motel — and it makes a comfortable base for fishing the upper river and everything else the peninsula offers.

The property has four riverfront cabins, each with a full kitchen and direct access to the lodge's private fishing docks. There's a fish cleaning station on site, so the day ends where it should. Guests have rated the experience 4.94 out of 5 — the kind of score you only get when the fishing and the hosting both hold up.

For anglers who want the full experience, the Bucket List Package is a 5-day, 6-night all-inclusive trip starting from $3,000 per person, bundling lodging, guided fishing, and gear into one booking. It's the simplest way to spend a week fishing the Kenai — upper river included.

GETTING HERE

Marlow's is road-accessible — about a 3-hour drive south from Anchorage along the Seward and Sterling Highways, one of the most scenic drives in North America. You'll pass right through the Cooper Landing area on the way in, so you'll see the upper river before you ever fish it.

If you'd rather fly, the Kenai Municipal Airport is roughly 40 minutes from the lodge. A rental car is recommended — the upper Kenai and the rest of the peninsula are an easy reach from Sterling, and having a vehicle keeps the whole trip flexible.
