WHAT IS THE KASILOF RIVER ESCAPEMENT GOAL?

ADF&G manages Kasilof River sockeye to a biological escapement goal of 140,000–320,000 fish and an optimal escapement goal of 140,000–370,000, both measured at the sonar.

MEASURE FISH
Biological escapement goal (BEG)140,000–320,000
Optimal escapement goal (OEG)140,000–370,000
ADF&G 2026 preseason total-run forecast (harvest plus escapement)about 1,460,000
2026 sonar count1,055,565

When the count is running ahead of the goal, ADF&G typically liberalizes the sport and personal-use fisheries. In 2026, with 117,665 sockeye past the sonar by June 23, it raised the sport bag limit to six a day under emergency order 2-RS-1-31-26. WHEN DOES THE KASILOF SOCKEYE RUN PEAK?

Mid-July, usually a little ahead of the Kenai. ADF&G puts the 20-year average midpoint of Kasilof sockeye passage (2005–2024) at July 17; in 2026, half the run had passed by July 20.

ADF&G's run-timing chart lists Kasilof sockeye as available June through August, and the sonar starts earlier than the Kenai's: the 2026 count began June 15 and ended August 7. Peak days in recent seasons have fallen between July 16 and July 24. For every species and river, see our Alaska salmon run timing chart.

WHERE IS THE KASILOF SONAR AND HOW DOES IT COUNT FISH?

The ADF&G sonar sits about 8 river miles above the mouth, just upstream of the Sterling Highway bridge. Sockeye reach it 12 to 36 hours after leaving Cook Inlet, so the daily count is a near real-time read on fish entering the river. A fish wheel samples the run each day so pink, coho and chum salmon can be separated out of the total.

ADF&G posts counts daily during the season on its Fish Counts site. Compare it with the Kenai River fish count and the Russian River weir count; the three runs do not always move together.

WHAT WERE THE 2026 KASILOF RIVER RULES?

FISHERY 2026 RULE ORDER
